MixxxOS, installable Livecd created just for mixxxing

Postby socialdefect » Tue Sep 28, 2010 4:22 pm

Since I couldn't wait for someone else to create a Mixxx distribution I've just finished the 1.0 release of MixxxOS which is ready for testing :)

MixxxOS 1.0 is a minimal OS intended to use Mixxx so it includes very little applications, just enough to use Mixxx, install applications and update the system, open, copy and edit files and archives, connect to LAN and WLAN networks and browse the internet. Also it is possible to directly start Mixxx from the login manager so no desktop will be started and more RAM and CPU are left for mixing ;)

I used Ubuntu 10.04 LTS as the base system with GDM and openbox on top, there are multiple xsessions to choose from at login. It's possible to log into mixxx directly from GDM but there is also a "MixxxOS settings" session (Default) which logs into openbox. The system is configured to be used installed to a hard drive but can also be used as a livecd or usb (works with unetbootin). Since most of the codecs still have to be manually installed for legal reasons I've included an easy to use installation wizard to add the medibuntu repository and install extra multimedia support and other restricted programs but on some systems it seems to fail. In the next release I will include a more stable script or synaptic-file to install the codecs, for now have luck with the medibuntu wizard or just use synaptic to install gstreamer plugins {good | bad | ugly} or just install the ubuntu-restricted-extras package to pull in multimedia support and the adobe flash player, java plugin and Microsoft fonts.

The live system was build using Remastersys wich is included on the cd and can be used to build your own livecd including the restricted codecs for example.

This is still a test release but it won't blow up your computer, most bugs are only cosmetic things like a nicer boot splash, a gdm theme and updating the help file.

If you think something is missing or like to share your ideas please notify me here or sent me a pm.
If there are open source drivers that you would like to see included in the next release please sent me a link to the sources or debs.

The 1.1 release includes a lot of extra's like a language selector, one click codec installer that also installs soundconverter and oggconvert, also I've implanted a Dropbox installer and some Firefox plugins Xmarks and Downthemall and fixed some issues that produced error messages.

Download MixxxOS 1.1 MixxxOS 1.1 x86 (32 bit), md5sum

Very cool!
The Mixxx Manual, Wiki and FAQ are the best place to start for documentation and support.

I've been working round the clock to fix the last bugs and am building the 1.2 release at the moment that will probably show up for download somewere tonight.

You can find the 1.2 release and more info on installing on the portable mixxx wiki page

Hope to bring you the 1.3 Final release soon that will include custom boot screens, login splash and fixes for user admitted bugs so feel free to bug me about bugs in the 1.2 release and if you like to create some artwork you are free to do so ;)

I think two people might be working on the same thing here...

I moved the topics into the same forum. I was considering merging them, but that might get confusing.

Surely the two projects needs to be combined, there's no point 2 groups of people working on the same thing.

as far as I'm concerned this one can be removed since I only started it to quickly get some testers ;)

If people have a .iso file I'll burn it and try it out.
