"Powered by Mixxx"

Postby pi r squared » Wed Apr 13, 2011 7:48 pm

Rarely a gig goes by where I'm not asked what software I'm using for playout. Of course, it is always Mixxx (I've played around with other software in the past but every live gig has always had Mixxx driving it), and I usually spend as long as I can spare talking to them about why I choose Mixxx above other (paid-for) solutions. Who knows, hopefully some of these people have then come by this site and had a look at it themselves.

So during the process of working on some new promotional stuff, I thought it might be worth paying a small tribute to the software that has powered too many gigs to even contemplate - the result, an 85cm x 215cm banner:

It's nothing fancy but just a small thanks to all the developers and people that make Mixxx what it is. I also plan to introduce this "dj:AP is powered by Mixxx" into somewhat more of my branding over time.

Cheers,

Pi.

(Incidentally the website is offline for the moment... I didn't want people to think I was spamming!)

I'm actually curious what your reasons are for choosing Mixxx, if you wouldn't mind sharing with the class. :) (Then you can make a tinyurl to your post and just hand that out on your business card when people ask why. )

And the nod on your promo cards is much appreciated!

I love the fact that it's open source, with a much faster release cycle than most commercial solutions, meaning it is constantly being improved. I like the fact that, again, with it being completely out in the open, I can even get hold of some of the new features before they're "released" (I was using the new library for quite some time before 1.8). I like the fact that they (ie. you) listen to "customer" feedback, and again have a very public bug tracking / wishlist system that gets closely monitored, aswell as a strong forum presence from most of the devs. I like the fact that it runs on Linux so that I can run it on a very stripped down, optimised system (not that I am at the minute... but the option's there ;)). And finally I love the fact that even as a non-coder, I feel like I can give something back - time spent helping (or sometimes "helping" ;)) people on these forums, bug reports, testing, donations, etc. If someday I find the time I will roll my sleeves up and learn some proper code so that I could have a look at the ever-growing list of bugs/wishes tagged "easy weekend", but that's a while away yet.

That's...about the gist of it!
