Crossfader for headphones only (prefade)

Postby amoe » Thu May 05, 2011 7:53 pm

Hi all,

First, thanks for Mixxx, it's a fantastic program!

My hardware mixer has a separate crossfading knob, labeled simply "Mix", that controls the relative volume of the two decks in the pre-fade only. This is very useful as it means you can modify the volume of the track you're mixing into without the audience hearing. It seems that the Main/Pre switch does not provide this functionality of balancing the two decks. If you try this using the gain, the audience can hear it, likewise with the faders.

Is there any way to do this in Mixxx?

Cheers,
David

Well, since v1.9.0 we have ReplayGain which causes the tracks to all be the same relative volume (if you don't mess with the gain knob.) Is that not sufficient?

Hi Pegasus, thanks for your reply.

Replaygain is very useful and I am using it, but the feature I am talking about is a bit different. It lets you balance the volume of the tracks differently while beat matching them. Quite often while beatmatching I find it useful to play one track louder than the other - particularly I want the track the audience can hear at the moment to be quieter on the prefade than the new track. But I don't want the audience to hear this volume difference when I eventually mix the new track in. I could do this by messing with the gain of the new track, but then I have to remember to reset the gain before I drop the track (I am dumb and will never remember this :p) And obviously I can't mess with the gain of the one that is playing out.

How difficult do you think it would be to add this feature if I wanted to do it? (I have a bit of C++ knowledge.)

Cheers,
David

Can we just confirm that you are definitely using two outputs - ie. you have two soundcards or a single soundcard with more than one output? If so then the PRE/MAIN controller should (and I can confirm, at least for me, does) work as expected when you are listening to the headphone output.

If you are using two outputs, can you confirm how they are set up in Preferences > Sound?

@amoe: the Pre/Main knob sounds like what you're looking for. Enable the headphone cue only on the deck you're mixing into, then tweak the Pre/Main knob to adjust how much of the cue bus you hear vs. the main out bus.
