Mixxx Effects

Postby B^nk^r B^st^r » Tue Jul 12, 2011 6:26 pm

Hi there! I've just made a transition from Virtual DJ, as it was getting kind of pricey. Now that I'm using Mixxx, I love the speed, the skins, and the fact it's free. But I am starting to miss the effects and the sounds that you could use. Now, there might already be effects and I just can't see them, but if they aren't, should they be? Personally, I think there should be, but what's your opinion?

If you wish, explain what effects you would like added! I would want an effect similar to the one which would juggle the beat...it's been a while since I've used Virtual DJ, so I can't remember any of the effects.

Thank you for your comments!

it would be very cool to be able to load VST-FX plugins into mixxx, or at least the LADSPA plugins who are also used by audacity
even cooler would be a basic feature to add synthesizer-plugins.

there is something similar available (free)
http://www.maizesoft.cn/cms/?q=node/11
except it lacks of DJ features.

so especially for online-radio-DJs,
mixxx with similar features like the ones that Air-Rack uses, would be very useful.

Personally, i would like to see effects implemented in a traktor/itch architechture.
In traktor, the FX are built in, high quality, and rock solid.
If you load external plugins, you have to deal with latency, instability, and different standards on different OS's.

What? The Flanger isn't the only effect you need?

We're cooking up an effects system. Hopefully it'll be done by v1.11 but I can't make any promises.

I see ALL the votes have been a definitive YES :-) So obviously I'm not the only one who wants this feature added. I was checking out videos of the Novation hardware yesterday on Youtube, and their new Ultra Nova effects keyboard--looked hard to learn but once learned, so many different uses just within the machine, of course at huge expense.
I've been able to create effects with Mixx by slowing down speed, adjusting tone (lower usually), even made some wobbles (quite by accident, hope I can figure out how I did it to repeat it again, listeners loved those effects as much as I do :) The hard way to go about it is to make effects from one track & save it as a recorded file, then pull that onto deck 2 side and mix it with your source on deck 1. Of course that's a lot of extra work & recording layers to add effects to mixes. So having a basic effects maker built in to the program is definitely the way to go--then those who want/need more complex stuff could make their own using the program itself, or perhaps build that into a later version. :P

I have to say that the main effect I would like would be echo, but I may just have to upgrade my mixer instead.

Overall, a sterling job by the developers. Lovely piece of software.

Thanks.

The beatmasher is pretty much the only reason I use Traktor 2 anymore. I'm not sure how easy it would be to program something like that tho...

I downloaded the traktor 2 demo, and the gater is amazing. Filters are good too.

Could someone fill us in on how the effect structure will work?
Will it require plugins, or be built in like traktor/itch? (i like the traktor style structure)

The way it's set up now in trunk (correct me if I'm wrong, RJ) is you write some C++ code that takes a sound buffer, does something mathematical to it (whatever you want,) then returns that buffer. The only requirement is that your code be damn fast since if it isn't, Rice Krispies will result due to the buffer not being ready when the sound card needs it.

The effects would then be compiled in to Mixxx. It's the only way for them to be as fast as they need to be, otherwise we'd have used Javascript.
