Mixxx should have a limiter

Postby merb » Thu Jun 07, 2012 12:57 pm

I just submitted a bug report about Mixxx's lack of a limiter. I believe that there should be a setting to enable or disable limiting the master output of Mixxx so clipping / audio distortion could be avoided at high volumes. This would also make it easier to work with multiple amplifiers (Mixxx's master could be set at 100% and volume could be adjusted by remaining amp).

Any thoughts? See https://bugs.launchpad.net/mixxx/+bug/1009987

Any time you apply limiting or compression, you're still distorting the sound. It just doesn't sound as bad as hard clipping. It's best to simply raise the gain so that Mixxx's full dynamic range is used but the clip lights don't light. Mixxx's use of ReplayGain tends to reduce the track volume though (on heavily compressed tracks like modern EDM.)

So what I could do if I want to keep my master volume fader all of the way up is just adjust the gains so that the clip lights don't light up?

Yes, though I wonder why it's important to you to keep the master volume all the way up. Why not just use direct deck outputs?

For me its easier to keep the master volume in Mixxx up so I can just change the volume with only one control, my amp which I put right under my controller. If I use direct deck outputs I can't use the controller to mix, can I?
