Mixman DM2 Information

Postby djswing » Sun Dec 28, 2008 5:34 am

I was looking around on the net for some inexpensive options for returning to DJing. I have been using Mixmeister Express for several years now, but miss being able to scratch, cut and the usual turnable tricks that go with playing Rap/Hop-Hop/R&B since that is what I mostly play. I ran across Mixx last night and found you can use a Mixman DM2 turnable console with it, but I haven't found any definitive information about using the software with it. There is a DM2 going for $20 on Ebay, combined with free software (thought I would donate to the cause) sounds like an affordable way to get back to mixing like I once did on my 1200's...

Thanks for any information!

Hi djswing,
sorry for answering that late ... your eBay article is probably gone? But if you're still interested in the DM2 thing: I own a DM2 too, so don't hesitate to ask if you have specific questions about it. And yes, the DM2 *does* work with mixxx, you can use it to scratch and to control various buttons of mixxx. If you don't mind editing a XML-File you can customize it's behaviour freely.
Also take a look into the mixxx wiki page http://mixxx.org/wiki/doku.php/mixman_dm2
Hope this helps someone,
kind regards wudligbauer

omfg sorry very much!
This was just plain wrong. No, I can't get the DM2 to scratch in mixxx. :oops:
Its wheels do work (as every other button) but they generate playback speeds in different steps, but sadly *not* directly related to wheel movement. That's not scratching, of course.
That said, I believe it *should* be possible to scratch with that nice DM2 thing - even if Mixxx doesn't do so ATM.
kind regards,

do you have an idea how one might go about making the dm2 scratch in mixxx,

so far I've been opening terminator x and connecting the dm2 to it. while mixxx is
controlled by my Hercules DJ console (mac edition).

what I'd really like to do is connect them together in j.a.c.k. and create a custom
xml.

but I'd need the scratcher rings of the dm2 to scratch if i where to totally commit
it to mixxx.

i really think the dm2 is a much better controller for mixxx but with the DJ console
helping out I'd never have to touch the laptop during a set.

OK, i looked at the xml for the dm2.

I'm guessing that "wheel" refers to the
scratcher rings.?.

<control>
<group>[Channel1]</group>
<key>wheel</key>
<miditype>Ctrl</miditype>
<midino>1</midino>
<midichan>1</midichan>
<options><spread64/></options>

options must control the sensitivity of the ring,....but what does spread64 mean?

I don't think it's just a problem of sensitivity at the moment. As far as I experienced it, Mixxx changes playback speed in just very few steps when rotating the wheel. For scratching there shouldn't be any steps (more exactly no recognizable steps), instead a direct wheel speed to playback speed relation.

oh, well... that makes sense.

last night i changed spread64 to hercjog and this morning i changed it to rot64.

both options sent the track out of control and made the track unresponsive.

should i remove the option, would that change the step/wheel relation?

ok, this:

<control>
<group>[Channel1]</group>
<key>wheel</key>
<miditype>Ctrl</miditype>
<midino>1</midino>
<midichan>1</midichan>
<options><spread64/></options>

should read more like this:

<control>
<group>[Channel1]</group>
<key>scratch</key>
<miditype>Ctrl</miditype>
<midino>1</midino>
<midichan>1</midichan>
<options><spread64/></options>

that's if you want the dm2 to scratch.
nudging the track is harder though.

i wonder if i still need the spread64 option?
