Audio Device Could Not be Opened

Postby rbedi100 » Mon Jan 19, 2009 4:29 am

Hi,
First off, thanks to the mixxx devs for a great product...really loving it. I've used it on my windows setup fine, but I'm having problems with it on ubuntu intrepid ibex 8.10. When I opened it up for the first time, I chose the music library, and then it wanted me to select my audio playback devices - no matter which one I choose, it says:
"Configuration Error. Audio Device Could not be opened".

I know my speakers are working fine - my audio's working fine. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

I'm facing a similar issue. I have two sound cards: one onboard Intel and one external Terratec 5.1. Both cards work in Intrepid otherwise. In Mixxx however, the onboard card works without any problems but if I select the external card it cannot be opened. I would really appreciate some input from the devs on this issue.

In my (limited) experience this is usually because you've not specified the same speed in Mixxx as the soundcard is running at (eg, 44100, 48000) etc. If you're using Jack then be sure to start Jack first, then Mixxx, and check the settings in Jack match the Mixxx one. If you're not using Jack, similarly check your ALSA settings match those in Mixxx.

Thanks a lot for the reply. Changing the Bit rate to 48k actually allows me to choose parts of the external sound card: Channel 1-2 and 5-6. 3-4 gives the known error message.
Unfortunately when I click on the button "headphones" the sound is also directed to Channel 5-6 (as it should) but it is not muted on Channel 1-2. Is this just me incapable of using Mixxx or is there a better explanation?

Well there's a separate volume control for headphones and the two "decks". Couldn't you slide the crossfader over to the appropriate side if you want to mute the output on the main outs?

I've got a hercules mk2, and it has a hardware switch to control what comes out the headphones, and if I set it to "mix" I get both decks, as mixed by the crossfader, but if I send one deck to the headphones that appears on the right channel, and the main mix appears on the other channel (so the mix as governed by the crossfader). However it also has hardware settings for "deck a" and "deck b" and they never get any sound ... i guess i'm still experimenting with this myself

Well, I don't want to mute the main channel. I just want want one of the two decks to be directed to headphones only when I hit the headphones button.

Yeah, I've tried this now, see what you mean. To get rid of the main mix out of the headphones channel you seem to need to use the crossfader, which also affects the main mix .... not sure what the story is there ... I can't see a way to do what you're trying to do, and now it's annoying me too

But that isn't intuitively how the Headphone button works on any mixer. It never overrides the main channel and nor should it.

You will have to slide the fader down on the appropriate channel (or use the crossfader - letters G and H work as short-cuts IIRC) if you don't want the sound going out through the main output aswell.

You are right. This IS actually the way it should work. What was I thinking?
