noob loving mixxx - a few questions....

Postby sca » Fri May 11, 2012 9:25 am

hello :)

i'm using the free version without sound card so can't beat match with earphones.

is there a kepboard short cut for beat grid adjust?

when the Beat-grid Adjust is off beat i see that i can adjust it with Beat-grid Adjust but it seems to still wander off the beat - is there a way of fine tuning a nd fixing this.

i am not understanding the Toggle Quantize Mode. I thought i could use it for matching beats. i tried it... read about it.... still don't get it....

is it possible to save my mixxx layout so that after i removed all file properties and details i don't use from the tracks menu (like: type, genre, year) they don't come back when i restart mixxx?

thanks!

* There is no paid version of Mixxx. Mixxx is always free.
* Currently there is no shortcut for beatgrid in the default keyboard mapping. You could add a shortcut to the mapping file, it a simple text file and instructions are here: http://mixxx.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=2077.
Just add to the respective section for channel 1 or 2 the shortcut you like,in this example "[" and "]". On keyboard press the Beatgrid moves to align with current playposition.
Example:
Code: Select all
[Channel1]
beats_translate_curpos [
[Channel2]
beats_translate_curpos ]

* Quantize Mode means the (Hot)cues and beat Loop-In and Loop-Out points align to the beat grid. This works good in theory but requires a exact beat detection. The beat detection in the most current Mixxx 1.10 ( the version you probably use right now) is far from accurate, so you probably have a hard time matching beats ;-) . If the quantize mode is off you can align all points in between the beatgrid.

BUT in the current development version for Mixxx 1.11 great progress has been made regarding the beat/tempo detection and the usability of automated loops.
You might want to try the current alpha version: http://mixxx.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=3678.
* As for the library`s header layout not saving : This should be fixed now. Please test in the 1.11 alpha version.

To get the beat-detection right, right click on the track title, select preferences, go to bpm detection.
If you have good rythm, you can have the song playing in the background. Then tap (click) the big button that says bpm with every beat (that is, on every beat). Once you're satisfied that you were tapping the right tempo, click apply.

This is not a beat detector, rather it's just a BPM tap button. This will be inherently inaccurate since there is latency introduced in multiple places (including the response time of your ears / fingers). I would suggest trying the Mixxx 1.11.0 beta because the new beat detector is hundreds of times better than the 1.10.1 detector.
