Ok, so another question that was raised in the IRC channel (by issyl0):

150.
English:
Up increases speed

vs.

151.
English:
Down increases speed (Technics SL1210)

Are these both correct? Should they both be translated as they are? Seems like it could either be a mistake or possibly a contingency for some difference with that turntable...

They are both correct.
Can be found in Preferences->Interface->Pitch Slider direction

We have 2 mode for the pitch slider direction which changes the tempo of a song when it is moved.
Standard is "Up increases speed" and alternately "Down increases speed" which is how the legendary Technics 1210 turntable handles the slider and most vinyl users should be familiar with.

Great stuff, gracias a todos!

I went over to the launchpad site and see that the translation in español is mostly complete. How would I go about importing that translation into a running system? I've download the mixxx.mo file from launchpad and dropped it into /usr/share/locale/es/LC_MESSAGES/ but Mixxx does not seem to pick it up.

What am I doing wrong?

As rryan said before, at this time there is no way to prove the translations, although, they are working hardly on that

Hi,

I won't start new topic, so I'll ask here.

I started my help in Polish translation, because there is a lot of work to do. I wrote some suggstoins now and much more ahead, but I've got important question.
Who can choose right suggestion and aproove it definitely? May I or should somebody else?

Thanks for contributing, much appreciated.
We have currently an open permission for translations, there is no special reviewer group right now. The goal is to gradually fill and improve the translations over the time. That said, you can approve suggestions by yourself - maybe leave some days for other translators to approve or come up with another suggestion.

I've got some more questions.
1) Does Mixxx have some possibility to see location of each text to check their meaning/context? Maybe some command line switch exists, which allow to run in some "developers mode" or something? Some texts are hard to translate, because I don't know what they decribes. Besides Polish language is rather complex and f.ex. most of nouns has 3 genres and translator need to know which genre is correct.
2) Some words in Polish language has no equivalent of english words (like in Spanish and many others). In many cases easier way is to use original words becouse words like "Cue", "Pitch bend" and others are obvious for polish DJ software users (hard to translate also). May I leave them in English?
3) I found some qute long text having <br> tag inside. How can I check if they are braked in correct positions and not crash some dialog boxes?

You raised some excellent points.

  • We are aware that many strings need additional context information and are in the progress of adding them to the source code. Unfortunately these changes will not make it in Mixxx 1.11, but in a later bugfix release. You can track the progress here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/mixxx/+bug/931489. Typically, these notes to translators are displayed in an extra field inside the translation software like QT Linguist, POedit, Virtaal or Lokalize or in web services like Launchpad.net or Transifex.
If you provide a list of ambiguous strings, i`ll can give you some additional context informations.
  • If these terms have passed into common language, it is ok. But some terms that seems obvious to you, might be incomprehensible to others. I strongly recommend using a translation software which will look-up the common terminology in your language. You can also check a common terminology dictionary like http://open-tran.eu/.
  • Try copying the whole original string into the translation field, and translate step-by-step inside each tag replacing the original words. So you wont miss any tag and avoid incorrect formatting. Most translation software provide quality checks as well.

Thanks. According to your suggestions I downloaded QTLinguist, our tranlations from Lauchpad and tried to release it to see in Mixxx. Unfotunately something goes wrong and output ".qm" file id much bigger than rest of translations (about 100kb) and Mixxx doesn't load it (although translation exists on available languages list). What am I doing wrong? :(
One more question: I aproved some old suggested translations, made almost 200 new and still working. How can I inform the rest of previous polish translators about it? I wold like to be checked and push my work forward.

Edit: I just checked recent activity of all polish translation members and unfortunately only one of them did something on Launchpad in last 2 months :( I wrote him an email asking for help. Now I wait for aswer. Considering this fact, the best thing I can do for Mixxx and our translation is keep working writing suggestions and waiting for help. If there will be nobody able to help and accept my translations, I'll do it myself.
