Library File on External Drive?

Postby jpv41193 » Sat Nov 26, 2011 3:53 am

I use my own personal laptop for Mixxx, so it has my personal music library on it. Much of which isn't what I DJ with, and all my music is in one place so all my music end sup in the library, even though I don't need it all. I've gotten around this annoyance by creating crates, but that doesn't stop mixxx from loading a larger library than needed.

I'm wondering if anyone has kept music on an external hard drive and pointed the mixxx library to the drive? Does it work ok? How does it perform? I'm just curious before I purchase an external drive for (mainly) this purpose.

I do this and it works fine. Of course you'll want to make sure the drive is always connected before starting Mixxx or it will think everything has gone missing. Since I also run Mixxx without the drive when I'm just testing, I copy my ~/.mixxx directory to the drive for safe-keeping after each gig, since the database file (with analyzed tracks, cue points, etc.) is stored in there. Then I erase ~/.mixxx and point it to the local music folder when I run it again for testing.

I think a better way would be if there was an option like "--configPath" (defaulting to ~/.mixxx if empty) like there is --resourcePath. This would also be useful for developement/testing where I would not like to mess around with my long living database. Then one does not have to copy files around (backup is nonetheless useful).

Excellent. I'll keep all that in mind when doing this.

I'm a bit confused on the discussion happening here, as I'm not sure what exactly is being talked about, and I have an additional question.

So I have my music directory on an external drive, and Mixxx points to that and everything is fine. However, the actual library file is still stored locally. Therefore all my bpm, cue, playlists, etc are all tied to that one local file. Now, the laptop I use has two partitions on it, one for Windows, and Ubuntu Linux on the other. I typically work in Windows, but Mixxx runs better on Linux (shocker, I know) and ideally I'd be able to switch seamlessly with Mixxx between the two operating systems. This would mean having my library and configuration files stored externally as well (or at least being able to point to each file and have them on a single partition).

Is this the current topic of discussion? All this "resource path" stuff? If it is, then I would enjoy this functionality as well. If not, is it possible to point to these files?

I suppose I could just copy the files to the external drive and then between partitions every time I make changes, but that would be tedious and being able to point to these configuration files seems (to me) like a relatively easy change to make.

Can't you can store it on any of the partitions since Linux can read NTFS partitions or if you store it on the Linux partitions just an ext3/4 driver for windows to read you Linux partition http://www.google.ca/#hl=en&cp=19&gs_id ... 80&bih=855

Yes, that's what is discussion is about. Currently, you must copy files from here to there everytime and it is not possible yet to just point mixxx to the right configuration files. This is why the team has set up a "feature request" (wishlist), so that it will hopefully be implemented in future releases of mixxx. Until then, you have to do the copying as pointed out by Pegasus in Comment #2 mixxx.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=3069#p11646

You can follow the status of the feature request here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/mixxx/+bug/898487
