It seems that this type of math would be in the realm of Digital Signal Processing. Sadly the prof I had for that course didn't teach it in a way I could understand well.

Are there any good DSP references that you know of that could help people to create effects?

Yes. We plan to work on effects in earnest for Mixxx v1.11.

Hopefully there will be a delay effect added (post-fader please). That's one of the only things missing from Mixxx in my opinion.

THIS.

The ability to run any VST even on just the output would be awesome. It would also allow you to limit the required FX's you need to add to just the basics.

I've got some bad news -- the effects framework won't make it into 1.11. Sadly the core developers behind it didn't make enough progress to finish it before the upcoming 1.11 feature freeze. Hopefully it will make it into 1.12.
The Mixxx Manual, Wiki and FAQ are the best place to start for documentation and support.

FX is one of those features that simply depends on who's using it for what. I personally don't use them, and don't miss them in MIXXX. But I can see where others would want to have them.

When it comes to sound processing of any kind, I can think of two things. First is compression. Yes, MIXXX normalizes the songs and does a nice job, but there are still times when one song seems a bit louder or softer than another. Compression (if used right) can help stabilize the volume while keeping the sound natural. The other thing might be echo. I normally don't use this, but I can recall years ago when radio station WPGC in Washington made use of an echo in all of their broadcasting. Very subtle, just a tiny amount, but it had a way that made every other station sound flat in comparison. If I had an echo FX, I might experiment with the same type of sound.
