record to mp3

Postby ithesoul » Sat Jan 24, 2009 8:10 am

Hi,
I am currently using 2 x cd players into a large external mixer with pfl function for cueing (mic and other misc inputs are also used in the mix).
I currently record the entire output from the mixer onto an external MP3 recorder.
I would like to play songs from a laptop using your software, send the output to a smaller external mixer, then record the mixer’s output on the same laptop in MP3 format.
Please can you let me know if this is possible?
Also, I need to reduce the mixer size (a smaller one I intend to use will not have pfl function for cueing). If you can recommend a good soundcard that I will be able to cue from, that would be great.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi,
actually I'm a little confused about your setup, but: recording is at least possible.

First of all: recording something from your external mixer is not a mixxx thing, you can use every piece of software that does this job - e.g. for Linux I found DarkIce (see http://darkice.tyrell.hu/) - but there are surely many more.
You should also know that encoding mp3 on the same machine puts some load on it which could affect mixxx' performance, but I don't know how powerful your laptop is. I personally would favorize your solution with an external MP3 recorder.

But to turn to another issue:
Mixxx needs to use your soundcard for playing the same time the recording software uses it for recording.
If you are using Windows, there should be no problem in running two different applications using the same soundcard.
Using Linux I experienced soundcard sharing to be a bit of a problem, but I am not too deep into these things. That thing is sadly more complicated than it should be...

Kind regards,
