Mixxx not opening on my laptop! :(

Postby EmpirialPrince » Sat Mar 24, 2012 9:23 pm

I am starting a little DJing group with my friend and we're performing a gig at a local youth cafe on Friday nights. Following research we decided to use mixxx until we get a DJ keyborad and Deckadance or turntables. I installed Mixxx successfully on my Packard Bell desktop running windows 7 ultimate 32bit and messed around with a few play lists. Of course the gig being at a venue outside my home I a need the use of a laptop. Happily coming home to install it on my laptop, I opened Mixxx. It asked me which directory to specify for music. I selected a folder and then the window closed and never opened again. Each time I attempt to open the app nothing happens. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit on a Toshiba Satellite C660-1F1. I have re installed the app, ensuring that the 64bit version was installed. I have also recently run into a similar problem running minecraft. Everything else I install or run works perfectly. This is really annoying for me as I need the laptop to do any gigs at venues outside my house. Any help is very much appreciated! :)

Hi EmpiricalPrince,

We're working on tracking down some issues related to our Windows build environment, and I've made a quick test build that you can test. I'm hoping it fixes some crash-on-startup issues like the one you're seeing.

There's three quick things I need you to try, if you have time:

1) Uninstall whatever version of Mixxx you have installed.

2) Download and install this new test version of Mixxx:

http://downloads.mixxx.org/targeted/mix ... albert.exe

3) Download and install this Microsoft C++ Runtime package:

http://downloads.mixxx.org/targeted/vcredist_x86.exe
(If it only gives you the option to "Repair" or "Remove", you don't need to install it.)

Please let us know if this fixes the crash on startup you're experiencing! These bugs are critical for us, and we appreciate your cooperation in helping us figure it out.

Thanks,
Albert

I seem to be having the same problem. I'm running 32bit Windows Vista (still!) and have tried the above fix, but Mixxx still seems to crash every time. I thought I'd use Mixxx to get around using the absolutely god-awful DaRouter, but I am quite sad that I cannot!

Please help me!

Hi malv173,

Ok, at this point I'm not sure what's going on, but there's a great tool we can use to try to find out more. It's called "Dependency Walker", and you can grab it here:
http://www.dependencywalker.com/depends22_x86.zip

If you can unzip that and run it, open up mixxx.exe from C:\Program Files\Mixxx and see if there's anything that looks "incorrect" in there. Ideally, see if you can print out or export a list of the "modules" that Mixxx depends on with Dependency Walker.

Additionally, you can try doing this "profiling" thing that tries to detect any modules/DLLs Mixxx depends on while it's running:
http://www.dependencywalker.com/help/ht ... xecute.htm

So if you have some time, it would be a super big help if you could give Dependency Walker a try. There might be something missing from our Mixxx installer or some subtle difference on your system, and hopefully this can help us figure it out.

Thanks!
Albert

Hold on here. There are two situations we're now aware of: one where Mixxx doesn't start at all and an error in KERNELBASE.DLL gets logged in the Event Viewer ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/mixxx/+bug/888773 ,) and another here where the OP says he can pick the music directory, but Mixxx then crashes. Can either of you attach a mixxx.log file and see what, if any, events are logged in the Application log? We'll need to file a new bug on this as well if it's not the same issue.

Hello again,

I have used dependency walker to open mixxx.log and in the modules section at the bottom there is a module called IESHIMS.DLL which states 'error opening file. The system cannot find the file specified (2). The the bottom there are two warnings. 1) At least one delay-load dependency module was not found. 2) At least one module has an unresolved import due to a missing export function in a delay-load dependent module.

Do you need any more info?

Hey malv173,

Ok, two follow-up questions there:

1) Which version of Internet Explorer do you have installed? (If the IESHIMS.DLL issue is a real problem, then somehow it might be connected with it.)

2) What kind of videocard do you have installed? Can you see if there's updated drivers for it?

Thanks,
Albert

Hey Albert,

I'm running Internet Explorer 9, and an ATI Radeon Mobility X1400 graphics card. It's reasonably old, but the drivers are apparently up to date.

May be time for a new laptop, eh!
