General Mixxx discussion.... discuss

If you own or are about to purchase an Electrix Ebox, do you need it to work on Linux?

Poll ended at Mon Feb 13, 2012 8:36 am

Yes, I use Linux for audio/DJ work.

It would be nice, but I use Windows/OSX just as much if not more often for audio/DJ work.

No, I never or hardly ever use Linux for audio/DJ work (or at all,) so it doesn't matter to me.

Good work ... and good timing for me. I've been working on other projects so have not been very near my decks, but I've recently been wanting to use my Ebox again.

Been looking for the patch in kernel 3.3.3 (stable) but I don't think it's in there. Which kernel should I be using ? Is it called testing ? I'm running Debian Wheezy (testing) so I might be able to install a stock kernel through that. I'm not sure I want to venture into a kernel compile because both my Linux systems are production systems. Guess I can wait for it to be released into the stable kernel.

EDIT: Neither can I find any reference to "electrix" on kernel.org (through gitweb).

Electrix Ebox-44 Linux patches

Postby Pegasus » Wed May 02, 2012 10:25 am

Looks like the patches are in the ALSA git tree.

Here they are directly if you want to patch manually:

1/2: snd-usb-audio: Skip un-parseable mixer units instead of erroring
2/2: snd-usb-audio: Replace mixer for Electrix Ebox-44

Ha ! 8-) So there it is. Been a while since I patched anything or even built a kernel but I might give it shot. Are you aware of roughly the time it takes for this to filter through to a stable kernel release ?

So when I get this going I'm going to finish off and tidy up my pages on the Mixxx wiki about setting up Mixxx with a Linux DAW & FX.

I did some research. So for anyone not initiated by Penguins into Linux yummines I'll attempt to explain here.

The update that is required to make the Electrix Ebox work with a Linux Operating Sytem has been developed for ALSA - Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (WP, Site). ALSA supports many sound cards and various sound devices which now includes the Ebox.

According to the links posted above the patches are for kernel 2.6 ...

Official ALSA project GIT repository for Linux 2.6

That's not a bleeding edge kernel ... for example 3.3 was released in March 2012. 2.6 is in most current Linux distributions which is good news because at worst this will mean building ALSA from source. More likely is that its as easy as updating ALSA through your package manager or finding the correct repository ("ppa" in Ubuntu) that has the latest ALSA builds in it.

Try it anyway, since I tested Mark's patches on 3.2.x and they applied fine.

So I obtain the Linux kernel source and build in the usual way after applying the patches to the files in sound/usb ? I think sound/usb is in the kernel tree, right ?

OK, struggling a bit here ... but at least I found the correct guide .... http://wiki.debian.org/HowToRebuildAnOf ... nelPackage

The kernel build process has changed a lot since I last did it ... around 2001 ! Lot's of new tools.
