Between the two -- taking the turntables and 600 records, or taking the laptop loaded with about 4,200 tracks, the laptop certainly is lighter, is easier to take in the car, and of course has a better selection. But spinning the 45's is decidedly more fun to do. It also attracts more attention to spin a stack of 45's in front of the crowd.

My next outdoor gig, where I use my own equipment, is a few months off. I have yet to decide -- take the records and worry about the weather (chance of rain, keeping the sunlight off the records, etc) or using the laptop where, even under a tent, I can't see the screen!

I've got some time to think about it.

That's what I'm saying: with time code on a 45, you could keep the real 45s safe at home (and safe from wear) while still spinning vinyl AND having access to all of your tracks using Mixxx's vinyl control. For extra fun, you could have a few such time code records with different label colors and stuff and change them each song for the same effect. Sadly, I don't think any 7" (45) time code records exist. There seems to be some demand though: http://www.native-instruments.com/forum ... p?p=634155 so if enough people ask Serato to make one...

Or, you could have a vinyl pressing house make you some custom ones. Just give them the audio file from the SSL CD, and they'd press the first few minutes of it onto the record. (You'd need to get permission from Rane/Serato to do this though.)

Sadly, I don't think any 7" (45) time code records exist.

They existed long time ago as a collectors item, although, with a few bucks you may buy a couple of them.

But I see your point, I'd do the same, get a couple of SSL TC vinyls, get an Electrix E-box44 some mixer and a nice laptop with Debian to bring down the house!

i use dell desktop speakers that are like 40 w to monitor and i have the pa speakers i built for when i feel like moving air or do a gig with friends

That's a super duper rig!, gotta love those V7's. What you only need is a Rodec or a Numark x7 or any high style DJ mixer.

Here is my couch potato setup. I am new to mixing and have only been using Mixxx since for six months. This is my first DJ Controller, the Numark Mixtrack Pro. It looks minimal in setup, but sounds good for being in my apartment's living room.
